For as long as the Internet has existed, there have been blogs. Just as I launched gananciasexpress, these sites are usually created by passionate bloggers who share their passion and knowledge on a particular topic, allowing them to interact with other bloggers.
However, with the spread of the Internet, a new category of bloggers has emerged: professional bloggers. These bloggers are Internet users who start their own business with the sole purpose of earning money. Nowadays there are many ways to monetize a blog, and it is possible to earn a full salary (or even more) with a simple blog.
Some bloggers, as is my case, initially created a blog out of passion before using it as a showcase to offer products or other services once they became successful. The income generated directly by the blog (through the solutions I mention below) is then just the icing on the cake, a complement to that income as a consultant.
But beware: the number of bloggers who can make a living from a blog is small compared to the hundreds (or thousands) who start every year. But today I wanted to address the question of how to make money with a blog. At the end of the day, what are the best solutions to monetize a blog?
Top 5 techniques to make money with your blog.
Before giving you the 5 best solutions to make money with a blog, I would like to share with you my experience as a blogger: you will never (or very rarely) be able to live only from one or another of these monetization solutions.
To make a living from your blog, you will have to combine these different levers and thus earn a few hundred euros with one or the other solution. The sum of all these solutions is what will allow you to earn enough money to pay yourself a salary. So think about diversifying these sources of income.
Selling content / articles
Selling content is one of the best ways to make money with a blog. It consists of a company paying you to talk about it or to put a link to their website.
How does content selling work?
You have a blog and therefore an audience. There are companies that may be interested in talking about their solution or product to this audience. They usually contact the blogger directly to offer to publish an article in exchange for a commission.
When a blog is not well known, companies may give gifts (very fashionable for beauty or fashion bloggers). Then, when the blog grows, the gifts are often replaced by gift vouchers or cash payments.
And what about the practical side?
There are platforms that match blogs with sites looking to buy links.
For example, suppose you have a site that talks about fashion. You can then register it on these platforms to offer it to sites that are interested in an article on your site.
Of course, you can define the price, as well as the conditions for publishing an article: how many words the article must have, whether it is possible to have a commercial article, whether it is you or the advertiser who writes the article… etc. You remain in control.
Once you have registered, there are likely to be commercial sites specializing in selling clothing that want to publish an article on your site: either to promote your site to their audience or to improve their natural referencing. They will then contact you to offer you publication and you can either accept or decline.
How much could you earn?
To give you a better idea of potential earnings, I have two websites. You are on the first one (gananciasexpress) and I have a second one in a niche that I will keep to myself.
I have registered these two sites on the following platforms:
- Publisuites: It is one of the most recognized sponsored article platforms on the Internet, characterized by offering a wide variety of alternatives for both advertisers and publishers.
- Getlinko; It is the fastest growing sponsored article platform in the last year for the following reasons:
- Coobis: It has been characterized over time for handling a lot of traffic on its site, which translates into many job offers secured with articles. Therefore, it is one of the best sponsored article platforms out there. Its operation is quite similar to that of other websites, so it is quite convenient and simple.
Thanks to these registrations, I have referenced my two sites on 3 different platforms. And on each of them, here are the rates I propose for a sponsored article:
- 100€ for gananciasexpress/article.
- 250 for my niche site / article
So all I have to do is sell one article a month on each of my 2 sites and I will have earned 350€.
My advice if you want to sell items
As I mentioned above, I regularly sell items to advertisers.
However, to avoid making the article seem too advertorial and having my blog end up boring its readers, I make it a point to make the article relevant to the reader so that the reader comes away from it having learned things.
Because that’s what a blog reader is looking for: information! And they are much more likely to accept advertising if the article has satisfied their need for information.
So avoid articles like “Company X launches new service” or “Press release: …”. Internet users tend to neglect them and they will burden your audience.
The first way to make money with a blog is of course to display advertising banners on it, also called “display”. Indeed, there are many solutions to display banners from advertisers who are interested in the topic of a blog.
There are then two main solutions for the remuneration of the blogger with respect to the display:
- CPM, cost per thousand impressions: a fixed amount paid to the blogger each time a banner ad has been displayed 1000 times. Many advertising agencies offer 100% CPM payment schemes.
- CPC, cost per click: variable amount paid for an advertising solution each time a user clicks on an advertising banner displayed on the blog.
I’m not going to lie to you, to make money with a blog and live entirely from display, you will need to make several hundred thousand visits per month.
To give you an example, my blog earns me just under 300€ per month thanks to the various ads I display on it. However, last month I had almost 100,000 page views. Well, this figure must be relativized because the people who read this blog are usually pretty savvy and hardly look at the ads anymore (when they don’t have an adblocker), but still. You will need a large number of visits to live only from display ads.
Selling qualified leads is an interesting source of income for a blogger looking to make money.
How does lead selling work?
The principle is simple, the blogger places an advertisement encouraging Internet users to fill in their details to obtain information on a particular topic. It can be a simple newsletter or a complete form. As soon as a company is interested in the contacts, it can buy the Internet user’s data and contact him again to offer its products.
The limits of lead selling
This monetization solution is not the easiest to implement because you need to find companies that are interested in buying qualified leads. Therefore, it requires careful thought and intensive research of partners who are willing to buy leads from you.
Affiliate is very simple but can be a real source of income if the blog’s audience is very qualified.
For example, this is the solution that brings me the most income on gananciasexpress: when I test a solution or a product and write about it, I always put a link to the site in question. As soon as a user registers or buys the product in question, I earn a commission.
How does affiliation work?
The blogger promotes products that are sold on online retail sites. When a user clicks on the link to a commercial site promoted in one of the articles and buys the product, the e-commerce site pays you a commission on the turnover generated.
Affiliate program example.
For example, a DIY blogger would do well to sign up for the affiliate program of a marketplace specializing in the sale of DIY and gardening products.
By registering on this marketplace’s platform, he will receive a percentage of the turnover generated by the tracked links he places in his articles.
An online store
This is the last solution to make money with a blog, but often one of the most effective: create an online store associated with the blog.
Indeed, when a thematic blog receives many highly qualified visitors every day, adding an e-commerce site to the blog is often an interesting alternative. As the population of visitors has affinities with the theme of the blog, there is a high probability that they will be tempted by products of this theme.
For example, a blog about horse riding would do well to open an online store selling products dedicated to the riders who regularly visit the blog. To avoid having to manage stocks, a good solution is to open a dropshipping site, a solution to create a site that is currently very popular because it allows you to launch an e-commerce business without having to invest in the expensive purchase of a stock of products.
